Joseph Wright of Derby, Miss Elizabeth Carver - estimate $70,000-90,000 at Brunk.

The paintings, from 1760, both in their original gilt 18th century frames with inscriptions to the verso, measure 4ft 2in x 3ft 4in (1.27 x 1m) and were part of a group of four portraits that were commissioned by the Reverend John Griffiths, rector of Eckington.

They passed down by descent until they were sold by Christie’s in 1934 from the collection of MCM Athorpe of Dinnington Hall near Sheffield after which they reappeared at auction at Christie’s and then at Sotheby’s. The paintings will be offered separately each with an estimate of $70,000-90,000.
