Christie’s sold a painting of the southern French alps from the collection of Mrs Henry Ford II for £42,000 in April 2021, a price that has seemingly bolstered demand for good examples emerging fresh to the market.

A recent example generating solid interest came at Kinghams (25% buyer’s premium) in Moreton-in-Marsh, Gloucestershire, on May 19-20.

Orange Trees, C’an Det was a view of the north Mallorcan landscape that had been discovered while emptying the contents of a Cotswold farmhouse. A bright and fresh work, the 19¾ x 23½in (50 x 60cm) oil on canvas was estimated at £3000-5000 but was knocked down at £9500 to a local private client who was bidding in the room.

The sum was relatively strong for a work of this size as well as for a work by Gore sold at an auction outside London.
