While structurally sound, the attractively small-scale, 2ft x 2ft 4in (62 x 72cm), table had some defects and repairs including splits and repairs to the top and repairs to the moulding, the block support and one leg.
It nonetheless outpaced a modest £800-1200 estimate to take £8000 in the July 15 auction in Leyburn.
George I period, walnut and crosshanded kneehole desk, £6000 at Tennants.
The classic 18th century furniture on offer in this sale also included an early, George I period, walnut and crosshanded kneehole desk. Measuring 3ft x 2ft 7in (92 x 80cm), it was fitted with an oak-lined frieze drawer which had six small drawers beneath set around a central cupboard and set on bracket feet with what appeared to be the original brasses.
The desk had some timber patch repairs to the sides, shrinkage splits to the side and front corners, a section of replaced moulding and some scratches to the top.
It sold for £6000 against a guide of £1000-1500.
