The 3ft 3in (1.5m) wide sofas, which have scroll arms and are set on six chamfered square supports linked by open fret carved stretchers, were catalogued as George III style, not ascribed to any period and guided at £300-500, but ended up selling for £10,800 in the Taunton auction.

A pair of mahogany framed sofas, one shown here, caught the eye when they featured in Greenslade Taylor Hunt’s (19.5% buyer’s premium) auction on August 3.
