Roman marble bust of Hadrian, $47,500 (£39,100) at Wiederseim Associates.
The subject of this over-life-size 14in (35cm) sculpture was the emperor Hadrian who reigned from 117-138. According to family history, the bust was acquired in Italy by Lucius Crowell (1911-98), an artist who painted extensively in Europe.
Together with other Italian antiques, the bust of Hadrian came to the US prior to the outbreak of the Second World War.
