Silver ‘three line’ penny, £7800 at Timeline Auctions.
Most are held in institutional collections so are not available to collectors. This silver ‘three line’ penny, found by a detector near Newmarket, Suffolk, last April, was sold for £7800 (estimate £4000- 6000) at Timeline Auctions (25% buyer’s premium) on September 6.
The new discovery introduces both a new moneyer (Eahdeneh at Canterbury) and a new reverse die. Eadberht III was king in Kent from 796-98. His brief reign was the result of a rebellion against the hegemony of Offa of Mercia and it marked the last time that Kent existed as an independent kingdom.
