An 1853 Gothic Crown, £50,000 at Sovereign Rarities.
The precise quantity is unknown but it was made specifically for the proof set dated that year sold through the Mint’s agents Hunt and Roskell.
Only 41 of these 1853 crowns have been officially graded, compared to close to 1200 crowns from 1847. Of those, this example, offered by Sovereign Rarities (20% buyer’s premium) on September 21 is among the finest examples known having received the designation of Ultra Cameo.
It sold for £50,000.
