Bidders obviously thought so: offered during a November 30-December 2 series of sales at Mitchells (22% buyer’s premium) of Cockermouth, the copy of The Gathering Storm, the first volume, sold at £4800 against an estimate of £80-120.
Consigned by a private vendor, it was described as being “very much in used condition”, showing some foxing and other marks, but it was said to be structurally sound.
The book came with a photograph of Churchill that also bears his signature and is dated 1947.
