A very plain, humble Hornby Dublo 00 Gauge goods van sold for £320 against an estimate of £200-250 at Minster Auctions (20% buyer’s premium) on May 18.

The SR (Southern Railway) D1 van came boxed and was described by the Herefordshire saleroom as a “superb example in September 1948 excellent box with SR sticker”.

Meccano introduced its 00 gauge trains in 1938 under the brand Hornby Dublo.

Wartime hit production and development, and clockwork versions were discontinued afterwards. Post-war versions - the ones usually offered on the market - ran on a thirdrail electric system.

The most sought-after Hornby Dublo items are usually the very early or later types. Southern Railway types are also popular with collectors.

In 2018 North Yorkshire saleroom Tennants sold an early clockwork 0-6-2T Southern 2594 locomotive for £6000 - thought to be a world record for a Hornby Dublo locomotive (ATG No 2371).
