Ruhmkorff coil priced at £3000 by Jason Clarke Antiques

This is reference to the German scientist Heinrich Daniel Ruhmkorff (1803-55) who, building on Faraday’s work, made a number of refinements that won him the Volta prize under Napoleon III in 1858.

This example, comprised of a mahogany base and a copper-wound two-part coil with iron core and glass insulators, is unsigned but conforms in design to all known examples of Ruhmkorff’s early induction coils.

Made in his Paris workshop in the 1850s, it is one of just a few surviving outside a museum and is priced at £3000 by Jason Clarke Antiques.
