Art dealer Josh Lilley.
1 How did you get your start?
I was 24 when I worked in Sydney for an inspirational art dealer – whose eclectic programme included William Kentridge, Leon Kossoff as well as the leading indigenous Australian artists from Arnhemland in the north of the country. There was great momentum around one artist in particular: John Mawurndjul. Eighteen months later I’d set up a business, raised money, and brought Mawurndjul and his group to London in two groundbreaking exhibitions in 2006-07. After paying back loans I opened my gallery in 2009 with the money I had left.
2 What events do you have coming up?
We have a book launch this week for a publication we have produced alongside Caulfield’s exhibition. In early September I’m excited to be doing Frieze Seoul for the first time, as well as Frieze London and Art Basel Miami Beach towards the end of the year.
3 How do you display art in your home?
My art is all around me. An Alex Da Corte wicked witch of the west sits behind rows of children’s toy dinosaurs. A Jeppe Hein balloon is just out of reach of the small people that walk around under it. A Leon Kossoff head looks at me when I wake up every morning.
4 What is one object you couldn’t do without?
My Hermes cologne.
5 Real ale or espresso martini?
Would be Guinness or gin and soda. And right now, gin soda.
