Early 19th century vellum document signed “Bonaparte” as Premier Consul sold for £3000 at John Nicholson's.
It was offered as part of a January 24 sale held in the Fernhurst, Surrey, saleroom John Nicholson’s (25% buyer’s premium).
Countersigned by Napoleon’s secretary of state and minister of war, it is a document in which Napoleon acknowledges the exceptional bravery shown beneath the walls of Alexandria in 1801 by François Schouder, a brigadier of the 14th Regiment of Dragoons.
In this somewhat later document of 1804 Napoleon acknowledges those actions in the award of “un Sabre d’Honneur”.
