Offered by Chiswick Auctions (25% buyer’s premium) in west London on February 14 with an estimate of £800-1200, this was a copy signed and dated December 1940 that Winston Churchill had given to his private secretary, Sir John Rupert Colville, more familiarly known as ‘Jock’.

It followed a visit to the school that had been arranged for him by Colville.

As a civil servant, Colville also served as a private secretary to Neville Chamberlain and Clement Atlee, but as his diaries reveal, it was Churchill who had come to regard him as a close friend.
