Its primary attraction is a 3ft 2in (96cm) marble top set with a central mosaic view of St Peter’s Square, flanked by eight circular animal vignettes and demi-lune panels depicting views of ancient Rome.
Consigned to auction by a family local to the Birmingham saleroom, it was contested by six bidders (through pre-sale bidding and on the day).
Against an estimate of £25,000-35,000, it took £47,500 plus 25% buyer’s premium.
