This rare pair of late 19th century terracotta eagles (above), each standing 2ft 2in (64cm) high has indistinct marks for Blanchard Terracotta London.
At garden statuary specialist Summers Place Auctions in West Sussex on March 28 they have a guide of £3000-5000.
Mark Henry Blanchard served his apprenticeship with the Coade Company and around 1839 established his own factory in London.
By the middle of the century he had emerged as the leading manufacturer of terracotta in Britain and was awarded prizes for his exhibit at the Great Exhibition of 1851.

This first edition in dust jacket is an advance copy with publisher’s compliment slip, author’s bookplate and an autograph letter signed on letterheaded stationery, addressed to My Dear Lord Berwick, and a typewritten presentation letter signed by Aileen Pippett, c.1955.
Pippett (1895-1974), a British journalist and biographer resident in the US, was author of the first full-length biography of Virginia Woolf.

A collection of miniatures and silhouettes is being sold at Chilcotts in Honiton on March 25.
It was put together over several years by Ron J Mills, a chocolatier in Bath.
Pictured here is a watercolour on ivory portrait of a young man wearing a blue coat by William Thicke (1787-1814). In a gold frame, with plaited hair verso and the monogram EFM, it has an estimate of £400-600 at this Devon sale.

The theatre was located on Aldwych at the eastern end of the Strand, shown here with St Mary le Strand Church in the centre distance. It suffered extensive bomb damage during the Second World War and stood empty until it was demolished in 1956.

The brooch, in a tapering Art Nouveau form, comes for sale from the estate of Major General Sir John Swinton. It had been a gift to his mother Mariora Erskine from her godmother, Queen Marie of Romania.

A selection of longcase clocks on offer on the final day of Mitchells’ Antiques & Fine Art Sale from March 22-24 includes a George III mahogany longcase clock by W Nicholson of Whitehaven.
The case features a swan’s neck pediment above an arched glazed door enclosing the 12in arched brass dial with penny moon and tidal dial to the arch, with eight-day striking movement date aperture and subsidiary seconds dial, flanked by fluted columns with long arched trunk door, fluted and reeded quarter columns and conforming base supported on ogee bracket feet.
The 7ft 5in (2.25m) high clock is estimated at £1500-2000 in the Cockermouth saleroom.

James Tennant, elected a fellow of the Geological Society in 1838, ran a mineral shop at The Strand until 1881. As mineralogist to Queen Victoria, he is best known for supervising the cutting of the Koh-i-Noor diamond for the crown jewels.
