They came from the estate of the late Sir Alfred Mordaunt Egerton (1843- 1908) and the gold enamel stickpin pin was presented by Victoria to him on her 80th birthday. It was engraved 24th May 1899, the special date.

Sir Alfred was a high-ranking English soldier and courtier who in 1878 married the Hon Mary Georgina Ormsby-Gore who was lady in waiting to the Duchess of Connaught.

The pins were estimated at £400-600 but the Moreton-in-Marsh auction house was hopeful for more given the “considerable interest from collectors in Queen Victoria memorabilia and the fact the pins were a personal gift with solid provenance”.

On February 24, in the Fine Jewellery, Watches & Designer Goods auction, they did indeed do better, selling for £1600.
