It was one of a group of European modernist carpets collected by Stein, whose estate is being dispersed on both sides of the Atlantic.

French-Brazilian Bruhns (1881-1980) was largely self-taught in the art of rug-making, disassembling Oriental examples to study the methods of hand-knotting that he would ultimately incorporate into his designs.

This Art Deco rug, measuring roughly 3ft x 5ft (91.5 x 1.52m), was estimated at $5000-8000 but ultimately hammered at $24,000 (£19,800) after dozens of bids from the floor and the internet.
