Highly typical of the artist’s set pieces, the signed example from 1956 was titled Spring Flowers in a Green Vase and measured 13½ x 20½in (34 x 52cm). The oil on canvas laid on board was kept behind glass in its original 18th century-style frame.
The estimate of just £200-300 ensured a bidding battle broke out at the auction on September 12 and it eventually sold at £2500 – one of the highest sums for Biddle at an auction outside London.
