Two evocative examples showing Westminster Abbey by moonlight and St Paul’s Cathedral in the evening led the picture section at Tennants’ (24% buyer’s premium) latest Country House sale in North Yorkshire.
Consigned from a private UK vendor, the two signed oil on boards measured 5¾ x 9in (15 x 23cm), making them typically small-sized works by the Nottinghamshire-born artist who also had a musical career and later moved to Australia, where he retains a following.
Offered together and estimated at just £200-300, the pictures in Leyburn drew interest from UK collectors but also a private international buyer who placed the winning bid at £6000.
The ‘pro-rata’ price of £3000 was above average for works of this size and continued the decent sums posted by works by Pownall over the last few years – such as the £5700 for a similarly sized view of the Royal Exchange at night that sold at Roseberys of south London in March 2022.
