All are pastel counterproofs made by applying a damp sheet of paper to the surface of a work in pastel before running it through a press to create a near-mirror image. Degas, Cassatt’s close friend and another champion of pastel, produced them too.

A substantial number of Cassatt’s counterproofs are believed to be the only remaining trace of the original pastel. Among the nine counterproofs offered here, all from the private collection of New York dealer Miroslav Klabal (MK Fine Arts), only two are known pastels. They formed part of the exhibition Art in a Mirror: The Counterproofs of Mary Cassatt held at New York’s Adelson Galleries in 2004-05.

They range in price from Nude Baby Standing Beside Mother, c.1898-99 (guide $6000-8000) to Mother Jeanne Nursing Her child (Profile Left) (No. 3), c.1908 (estimate $20,000-30,000), pictured here.
