At its height, their collection comprised of some 700 pieces from all parts of Europe, complimented by numerous publications and exhibitions.
Last year, the couple sold approximately 150 works to a museum in Augsburg, once a major centre of the art. On November 16, Lempertz in Cologne is selling a further 95 pieces from the collection.
The Steiners have stipulated that the guide prices should be set low, with the hope of encouraging new collectors to discover this field of collecting.
There are many notable pieces in the sale, many of which are being sold with the graphic works on which they are based. The Italian artist who for instance created the 9½ x 7½ in (24 x 19cm) portrayal of the Madonna, Crowned by Two Angels in the second half of the 16th century, which is guided at €3000-8000, adapted a copperplate engraving by Albrecht Dürer from 1518 for his motif which he partly heightened with gold leaf.
Reverse-glass The Annunciation from 1661, French, estimate €5000-10,000 at Lempertz.
The Annunciation from 1661 is the only known signed and dated example of French glass painting from the 17th century. It is the work of the Parisian artist Philbert, about whom nothing is known. He drew his inspiration from a 16th century engraving by Marco Dente from Ravenna which in turn was based on a lost drawing by Raphael.
The 21 x 18in (53 x 47cm) painting in its carved and gilt frame is expected to bring €5000-10,000.
