An exhibition of work by Austrian-Argentine painter Mariette Lydis (1887-1970) is being held in London.

The show and catalogue Mariette Lydis - Dreams and Destiny is a project worked on over a number of years and put together by Justin Croft Antiquarian Books and Antwerp book dealer Cult Jones.

A celebrated book artist, Lydis illustrated works by Charles Bauldelaire, Edgar Allan Poe, Pierre Louys, Colette, Henri de Motherlant, Shakespeare, Henry James, Sappho and many others.

The collection includes every book illustrated and published by Lydis between 1922-39 together with prints, posters and drawings by the artist. The books, prints, drawings and ephemera included in both the exhibition and catalogue are offered for sale as a collection priced at £125,000. These include her two most provocative and elusive books, Lesbiennes (1926) and Criminelles (1927).

The exhibition runs until October 14.

Laserstein emerges from the paper

Agnews is selling a self-portrait by Lotte Laserstein (1898-1993). Laserstein began her career in Berlin but had to flee from the Nazis and lived in Sweden for the rest of her life. The pencil on paper, c.1920s, has an asking price of £12,000.

Fabry in three dimensions

Elliott Fine Art offers this Suzanne Fabry (1904-85) triple self-portrait from 1934. Born in Brussels in 1904, Fabry was the daughter of the Symbolist painter Emile Fabry (1865-1966). She pursued a career as a painter alongside her work as head of Brussels’ opera house, La Monnaie, costume workshop until her death in 1985. Her most impactful and original work dates from the 1930s and early 1940s. This work has an asking price of £60,000.

Hilton sets the studio scene

David Messum Fine Art hosts an exhibition of paintings from the estate of Rose Hilton (1931-2019), at its St James’s gallery until October 27. All works are for sale and are priced between £685-38,500. Among the works is this painting called Artist and Model (2003) priced at £36,500.
