Korean slip-inlaid (sanggam) celadon-glazed cup, estimate £8000-12,000 at Roseberys.
During this period, celadons were the main type of ceramics produced in the Korean peninsula. They owe their shades of blue-green to the minerals and metals within the raw materials – particularly iron oxide, manganese oxide and quartz in the clay.
This cup stand, that would have supported a foliated cup of similar decoration, features a technique barely known in China, which involved the etching of designs in the clay, which were then filled with black and white slip. Estimate £8000-12,000.
