The 7in (18cm) long model, dated to c.1795 was cracked but nonetheless managed a price of £1400 (guide £80-120) in the British and Continental ceramics and glassware sale in Washington, West Sussex, on August 3.
A similar version in the form of a lidded container is illustrated in John and Griselda Lewis’ Prattware, noted the auction house.

Staffordshire figure of an elephant, £3000 at Potteries Auctions.
A more recognisable zoomorphic model came in the form of a 7½in (19cm) Staffordshire figure of an elephant set against a bocage background which featured in the four-day sale held by Potteries Auctions (25% buyer’s premium) in Newcastle under Lyme from July 5-8.
Dated to the early 19th century, there were some losses to the bocage and a missing tail, but it managed a price of £3000 against an estimate of £100-200.
