One of two paintings of kingfishers by Raymond Ching that sold as a single lot for £14,500 at Roseberys.
After a sell-out show of his drawings at John Leech Galleries in Auckland in 1966, he moved to London to produce a series of prints for The Reader’s Digest Book of British Birds, published in 1969.
With his work in high demand today, two pictures with appealing subjects drew considerable interest at Roseberys (25% buyer’s premium) in south London on June 6.
The 19 x 13½in (48 x 34cm) signed oil on boards from 1978 depicted a kingfisher in flight.
One had featured in Peter Hansard’s 1981 book The Art Of Raymond Ching: Paintings And Drawings 1972-1979.

Consigned from a private collection, they were offered as a single lot with a £3000-4000 estimate. After healthy competition, the lot was knocked down at £14,500.
Although Ching’s larger and more crowded bird pictures can certainly make more, this was a good sum for works of this size.
