It was inferred that woodwork from Liberty’s iconic Great Marlborough Street ‘Tudor Building’ is being sold, but this is not the case.
The collection of woodwork for sale was carefully deconstructed from three floors of Liberty House on Regent Street in the late 1990s before they vacated it.
The woodwork for sale arose from the redevelopment of the property, which changed use from a department store with connected floors to multiple fashion shops, and has been in storage since.
It is good to see the reclamation evoke a strong response, as many architectural features are quietly destroyed.
Adventurous spirit
The reclamation chimes with the adventurous spirit of founder Arthur Lasenby Liberty, who was a pioneer in his reuse of reclaimed timber.
It is sad but true that masses of architectural elements are still being wasted. Salvo was established to raise awareness and increase reuse to see that more pieces are given a second life, preserving cultural, social and environmental benefits.
