This 14 x 17¾in (36 x 45cm) example had the bonus of being an early work that was dated and also located, being embroidered just beneath the fenced garden Agnas Donaldson Bridge of Earn 1808.
That inscription confirms it as a Scottish sampler (Bridge of Earn is a town in Perthshire). A house, Adam and Eve with the serpent and the Tree of Knowledge and various religious inscriptions are other features.
Offered for sale at Littleton Auctions (19% buyer’s premium) in Worcestershire on August 19 with an estimate of £500-800, it ended up selling for £5000.
