Night of the Demon is a British-made production from 1957 directed by Jacques Tourneur, adapted from MR James’ short story Casting the Runes. It involves an American psychologist who travels to the UK to investigate a satanic cult.
The film is certainly highly rated by poster collectors, judging by the result for a British Quad 2ft 6in x 3ft 4in (76cm x 1.02m) design on linen sold by Propstore (25% buyer’s premium) for a top-estimate $30,000 (£23,625) in Los Angeles on December 7.
An appearance of the demon depicted was insisted on by the producer despite the reluctance of Tourneur and writer Charles Bennett.
