Living next to one of the Three Musketeers of Cubism evidently rubbed off. Hodé was among the artists who exhibited in the Salon de la Section d’Or in 1912 at the Galerie la Boëtie and much of his future stock in trade had a Cubist tone.

Normandy was always his favourite region to paint. This unframed 2ft x 20in oil on canvas depicts the busy port at Dieppe – a scene he painted many times. It was offered on November 28 at Kodner (26% buyer’s premium) in Dania Beach, Florida, with what was a very appealing estimate of $200-600.

Several Hodé oils of this size, style and subject have sold for over $10,000 in recent years and this one joined them when it hammered for $12,000 (£9500).
