René Lalique Art Nouveau platinum, carved rock crystal, moonstone and diamond garland brooch, $50,000 (£40,000) at Doyle New York.
The April 18 jewellery sale at Doyle New York (28/27/21/15% buyer’s premium) included two fine examples of his craft from c.1900. Pictured above is a platinum, rock crystal, moonstone and diamond garland brooch centred by an intaglio carving of a nude woman framed by a twisted furled scarf. A similar example is pictured in Sigrid Barten’s book René Lalique, Schmuck und Objets D’art 1890-1910 where it was dated c.1903-05. It came for sale in its original box with a guide of $15,000-20,000 and hammered at $50,000 (£40,000).

A second piece of Lalique jewellery, a gold, plique-à-jour enamel and diamond ‘Femme Papillon’ brooch, was estimated at $20,000-30,000. It brought $45,000 (£36,000).
