This previously unknown snippet of correspondence between the poet and the political reformer was penned on June 26, 1813.

Byron, an overnight success the previous year after the first two cantos of Childe Harold’s Pilgrimage were published, apologises for not being able to meet Cartwright in London as he must leave the next day. He signs off “truly yrs B”. It is thought the two men knew each other through Byron’s father Admiral John Byron, whom Cartwright had served under between 1765-70.

The letter, discovered with other Cartwright correspondence, was estimated at £1500-2000.
