Due to open in early July, the new shop is a short move for the books specialist, taking it along New Bond Street from 106 to 94. The 8000 sq ft corner property will house the company’s headquarters, bookshop and galleries. Shapero Modern is to remain in its current location on Maddox Street.

The firm’s Bernard Shapero said: “At a time when many businesses are moving online or away from shops into offices, I believe it is important to keep a strong presence in the heart of London.

Shapero’s new chapter begins - just down the road

“Our customers are both local and international collectors and they still love to come into the shop and talk to us about what they are searching for to grow their collections.

“Even more importantly though, we regularly attract new customers and to them location is key. London continues to maintain its position in the international rare books and art world and as such we have to show that we are open for business.”

The dealership offers around 6000 rare items from the 15th to 21st centuries.

Despite the general trend towards online dealing that Shapero notes, several major businesses have committed or recommitted to Mayfair, including fellow rare book dealers Sotheran’s, which shifted from Sackville Street to Upper Brook Street last month.

Asian art dealer Marchant will arrive in the area next year, and silver specialist Koopman moved there in 2021.
