A slice from Prince Charles and Princess Diana’s 1981 nuptials is expected to take top honours at Julien’s Auctions' sale of June 23. The cake is contained in a white box with silver printing that reads CD/Buckingham Palace/29th July 1981 and is wrapped in a paper doily. It comes with an envelope to Mr and Mrs MJ Waite with Queen Elizabeth’s royal stamp and is estimated at $800-1200.
Another top confection is expected to be that of Prince William and Kate Middleton. Their marriage in 2011 was television’s most watched wedding ever. Estimated at $600-800, the slice of fruitcake made by Fiona Cairns comes with an enclosure card that reads With best wishes/ from/ TRH The Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall/ in celebration of the wedding/ of/ TRH The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. It is offered with a programme of the day.
Other cake slices at the sale include one from the marriage of Prince Charles to Camilla Parker Bowles in 2005, estimated at $600-800, the wedding of Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson in 1986, also estimated at $600-800, and one from the union of Princess Anne to Captain Mark Phillips from 1973, estimated at $300-500.
The sale follows the May wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle and precedes that of Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank in October.
