A portrait of Napoleon after François Gérard (1770-1837) will appear at Mallams’ Cheltenham auction on September 14. It is believed to date from c.1840.
The canvas is primed and bears the stamp of Charles Roberson – who supplied artists’ materials from his shop on Long Acre in London from c.1820-30.
The 4ft 2in (1.27m) square oil on canvas comes in a gilded wood frame with hand-carved details of Napoleonic eagles on each corner and carved bees as the inner border. It is estimated at £3000-5000.
