Harpignies was a member of the Barbizon School, a community of painters that lived in the forest of Fontainebleau and specialised in landscapes and scenes of rural life.

Inspired by John Constable, they sometimes worked in the open air and were among those 19th century artists working towards Realism in art, laying the groundwork for Impressionist painting.

After travelling with Corot to Italy in 1860, Harpignies won his first great success at the Paris salons, where he won medals and acclaim for years to come.

This work, titled Moonlight, is typical of the landscapes he produced. It is thought to depict a lake in the south of France, is shown under a cloudy night sky.

It is offered for £1450 by Timberhill Gallery at the fair. A total of 45 exhibitors stand at the Harrogate event offering a variety of antiques, decorative items and fine art.
