Richard Bromell at Charterhouse said he believed it might be the work of American society painter John Singer Sargent (1856-1925), but was unable to find any connection and the identity of the sitter was unknown.
The picture, estimated at £100-200, was consigned from a local vendor, whose wife bought it in the late 1980s.
