When the Louis Vuitton brand entered luxury luggage retail in the 1850s, it swiftly transformed the marketplace with its high-quality trunks which were lightweight, airtight and, crucially, stackable. Until then, rounded-top trunks had been used (generally to promote water run-off) and thus could not be stacked. The first such flat-top design was Vuitton’s grey ‘Trianon’ canvas trunk.

Eight inter-war trunks, suitcases and smaller cases by Louis Vuitton, complete with their original keys, have been consigned to a May 17 sale at Lawrences of Crewkerne from a private collection in Somerset. Estimates start at £300-500 for this early 20th century plain leather suitcase.
