Husband-and-wife team Andrew and Olwyn Pye founded the business in 1995. Unusually for the time they sold almost exclusively by post and were early adopters of the internet to do business.
The couple say: “We were amazed to grow to having customers in 52 countries and from all walks of life, including Hollywood stars, Wall Street moguls, UK chief executives and royalty. Numerous friendships have developed over the years and many early customers have remained loyal.”
Their business extended to include earthenware of all colours and ages – including new Burliegh produced using traditional methods.
However, blue and white was still at the heart of the business and they collaborated with Transferware Collectors’ Club to create the Database of Patterns & Sources.
Now they are slowing down, tackling the job of reducing their large stock and say there are still several thousands of items to go. Though they are determined to retire, they add that they would “welcome the unique brand continuing”.
