It bears an original inscription to the base OLD FORT GAUT, CALCUTTA Within the walls of this fort is the black hole, whose name is eternized by the sufferings of Mr Holwell and his ill fated companions in 1756.
The 8½in (21cm) diameter plate is estimated at £4000-6000.

Tennants’ Toys, Models, Collectables and Sporting Sale on April 5 is led by a Hornby O Gauge 4-6-2 Princess Elizabeth LMS 6201 estimated at £1200-1800. The locomotive was a special model issued in 1939 just before the war, and was the only Hornby locomotive to be a faithful replica of the real train, down to the smallest details.
The full-sized Princess Elizabeth was the most famous of the London Midland and Scottish railway’s giant locomotives. It made history in 1936 for setting a world record for a long distance non-stop steam journey, from Glasgow to London, travelling at an average speed of 70mph.
Unfortunately, the close modelling on the original train had a drawback. The distinctive three-couple wheel design meant that it could not get round the corners on an ordinary curved Hornby track. Many of the extant examples of the model, such as the present lot, are to be found in good condition in their original display boxes, as they were not able to be used on the majority of home model railways.

Sworders’ sale of Old Masters, British and European Art on April 4 features some very fine English watercolours from an English private collection.
They include a painting from David Roberts’ famous Holy Land series that is guided at £20,000-30,000.
Roberts’ watercolour of Jaffa is dated March 26, 1839, and was probably painted on the spot. Depicting the ancient city port of Judea – where Noah is said to have built the ark – it features the colourful costumes, the exotic animals and the impressive architecture and ancient monuments that made the region so appealing to Western eyes.
Roberts made several views of Jaffa, two of which were converted into lithographs for his monumental three-volume publishing project The Holy Land.

Early Star Wars figures are going under the hammer at Richard Winterton in Tamworth on March 29.
The collection includes around 50 original figures in sealed blister packs, 28 of which are catalogued as single lots including Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, Boba Fett and Yoda.
There are also three ‘Mail-away’ Boba Fett figures, which would arrive in plain packaging having been ordered through the post via a special offer. Boxed Star Wars toys include a 12in tall Boba Fett, radio-controlled R2-D2, an Imperial Troop Transporter and an Electronic Battle Command Game.
The collection was compiled by a toy salesman who went on to open his own shop. He owned them for 40 years and died in 2022.

The artist was a pupil of Cedric Morris at Benton End, Suffolk. This canvas shows the nearby city of Ipswich looking towards flour mills on the docks.
Watercolour and gouache triptych design by John Piper for the Oundle chapel windows, estimate £8000-12,000 at Parker Fine Art Auctions.
Oundle chapel was consecrated in 1923 as a memorial to Oundle school old boys who had died in the First World War. To celebrate the Northamptonshire school’s quarter centenary in 1956, John Piper (1903-92) was commissioned to design a series of stained glass windows for the apse.
These windows are famous for being the first collaboration between the artists John Piper and Patrick Reyntiens – the man who ‘translated’ Piper’s designs to the medium of stained glass. Their partnership of 30 years produced some of the most important and influential stained glass in this country.
Piper designed over 60 stained glass windows.
The Oundle windows portray Christ in nine forms. The central figure of each one is a green man, influenced by Picasso’s paintings and French medieval stained glass and sculptures.
It took three years to make the windows and they were dedicated by Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother in 1956.
Soon afterwards, the architect Basil Spence went to see them and decided to commission Piper and Reyntiens to produce a huge baptistry window for his cathedral in Coventry.
On April 6 Parker Fine Art Auctions in Farnham, Surrey, is offering a watercolour and gouache triptych design by Piper for the Oundle windows, measuring overall 17 x 13.5in (43 x 34.5cm). Estimate £8000-12,000.

This Tiffany blue guilloche enamel and rose cut diamond fob watch with the monogram FJL comes for sale in its original Tiffany & Co, Paris box. Dating from c.1910, it has a guide of £600-800 at Great Western Auctions in Glasgow on March 31-April 1.

The Modern Living sale at Mallams in Cheltenham on March 29 includes items from the collection of auctioneer Paul Whitfield (1942-2018).
He was managing director at Christies King Street by 1969 and an instrumental figure in the setting up of Christie’s South Kensington. After Christie’s, he worked in a series of roles at Bonhams, Sotheby’s, and finally Phillips.
He had a deep knowledge of Arts & Crafts, something that was reflected in his own collection housed at his Cotswold home outside Chipping Campden. This 8in (20cm) vase decorated by Edward Porter for William De Morgan (1839-1917) has some damage and restoration and is guided at £200-400.
