The late Gerald Kenyon.
He was educated in Chester, although school was not for him – he left early and joined his father in the antiques business. He had to do National Service and joined the Ordnance Corps affiliated to the King’s Shropshire Light Infantry.
When Gerald was demobbed he joined the family antiques business. He married firstly Muriel Gaskell and had two sons, Barrie and Clive. They subsequently divorced and he then married Pat née Johnson and they had four children, Simon, Mark, Jonathan and Sarah, who died suddenly when young.
Gerald was a frequent visitor to Ireland and when he married Pat he came and settled there and established shops at various times in Dublin in South William Street, Powerscourt Town House and eventually in Lower Ormond Quay.
Very soon after arrival he established himself as one of Ireland’s leading dealers.
His knowledge was prodigious and he was unbelievably generous in sharing with everyone; so many people have been helped by him. He dealt in the most superb pieces of every sort.
Gerald was a founder exhibitor at the Irish Antique Dealers’ Fair in Dublin where he always had an outstanding stand. When the Irish Antique Dealers Association was established he was a founding member and councillor and remained on until the end.
Every year he enjoyed the CINOA meetings and had helpful opinions to share. His conversations and humour were enjoyed by everyone.
Gerald was an expert about and promoter of Irish furniture and wrote an invaluable book, Collection of Irish Furniture at Malahide Castle.
He was a kind, generous dealer admired by everyone – a never to be forgotten, lively and flamboyant person.
