Fairs organiser Blackdog Events is betting on its latest venture in Norfolk being a dead cert.

The new Dark Horse Brocante is under starter’s orders on Sunday, June 9, and again on Sunday, August 4, at Fakenham Racecourse.

Kate Button of Blackdog Events, which runs brocantes at three stately homes across East Anglia between April and October, says: “As our walled garden brocante on the Raynham Estate, which was a big success last August, was no longer viable for this year, we revisited the nearby racecourse which is near Wells and the north Norfolk coast.

“The venue is a bit of a dark horse in terms of how it will do, hence the name, but we’re betting on it being a winner.”

“Variety of customers”

Among regular exhibitors of Blackdog Events fairs is Alison and Brian Norman . Alison specialises in antique prints and pictures with a special interest in the caricaturists Gillray, Rowlandson and Cruikshank (her stall is pictured top), while Brian sells scientific antiques and 18th and 19th century curiosities.

They say: “The joy of an antiques fair is that a wonderful variety of customers turn up, from dealers and specialist collectors to antiques enthusiasts looking to buy something beautiful and interesting.”

The organiser launched a new event last year, the Runway Flea at Debach Airfield, near Woodbridge in Suffolk, which is also home to the US 8th Army Air Force 493rd Bomb Group Museum.

“The flea here was a big success so we’ve booked three dates there this year,” adds Button.

The first of the 2024 Runway Fleas at the airfield runs on Sunday, April 21, the first event of the Black Dog season.
