Longcase signed Ed. Bullock, Oswestry, on offer without reserve at Metz.
The dial of the 8ft 2in (2.5m) high, eight-day clock is signed Ed. Bullock, Oswestry and fitted with a date aperture and a subsidiary seconds dial; the case is intricately inlaid in a multitude of floral motifs.
The first mention of Edmund Bullock in parish records dates to 1708. He is known to have produced and/or repaired several turret clocks for local churches and public buildings but was also well respected for the quality of his longcase clocks. Some were simpler, 30-hour pieces in relatively plain cases, while others like the clock in Heidelberg were of the highest quality.
It obviously also impressed the legendary London dealer Percy Webster, whose label with an extensive description of the clock can be found on the inside of the case.
