A first edition of A Night in London (1938) by British photojournalist Bill Brandt (1904-83) is among the offerings in the photography section on Voewood Rare Books’ website.
It moves between different social classes to tell the story of the capital at night, with Brandt’s family and friends modelling some of the different roles.
Brandt said later: “I photographed pubs, common lodging houses at night, theatres, Turkish baths, prisons and people in their bedrooms. London has changed so much that some of these pictures now have a period charm almost of another century.”
It was his second book and was based on Paris de Nuit (1936) by Brassaï.
A Night in London is available for £2500 online and is also offered by the dealership at the PBFA fair.
