The amount of consignments meant that the sale of December 8-9 had to be extended: the final session takes place on December 11 (the general antiques sale was already scheduled for December 10).

Among the attractions are several extensive collections – not only that of Ruth Boss, one-time private doctor to the last Empress of China (see ATG No 2645), but also that of a European diplomat, who was posted to Nanking between 1921-28, being sold by his family.

Among the highlights is a pair of early 19th century carved and lacquered cabinets, made of zitan, a hardwood so highly prized in China that for many decades its use was closely controlled. It could be used exclusively in the imperial workshops.

The estimate is €60,000-100,000.
