Sculpture

A branch of the visual arts traditionally typified for being solid and three dimensional. Media used to create sculpture including stone, bronze, pottery and wood. In their appearance, sculptures may be divided into two categories, either free-standing (in the round) or adjoined to a background surface (relief).

With the development of plastic art in the 20th and 21st century, the definition of sculpture was broadened to include works specifically concerned with the three-dimensional form.

A maquette for the famous statue of Mahatma Gandhi in London’s Tavistock Square that was valued at £20,000 six years ago on BBC’s Antiques Roadshow by dealer Philip Mould drew a lengthy bidding battle at auction today.

A pair of early 16th century carved stone putti was the toast of a recent auction at Sotheby’s Paris. Created for the chapel of a famous German Renaissance banking family, they sold as part of a collection from a French château for €1.95m (£1.71m).

This over life-sized marble bust depicts Emperor Didius Julianus, who ruled the Roman empire for just a few short months in the year 193AD. His fleeting 66-day reign took place during the tumultuous period known as ‘The Year of the Five Emperors’ and came to a grisly end when he was murdered by a common soldier.
