Bowes Museum

The Bowes Museum was established in Durham as a public gallery by John Bowes and his wife in 1869. The museum houses works by European old masters such as El Greco, Goya, Fragonard and Canaletto.

The Bowes Museum holds regular exhibitions and in 2005 opened up a new Fashion and Textile Gallery, a Silver gallery and an English Interiors gallery.

Reunited after 200 years

THANKS to a clever bit of detective work by one of its curators, the Bowes Museum in Barnard Castle has been able to reunite a porcelain cup and saucer that have separated for over 200 years.
