Heritage Auctions

Heritage Auctions are an American auction house presided over by Steve Ivy and Jim Halperin, who merged their companies together under the Heritage umbrella in 1982.

Their headquarters are in Dallas, Texas but they also hold auctions and have offices in a number of other locations including New York, California, Hong Kong and Europe. At auction they offer a range of items including fine, decorative and contemporary art. They also hold specialist collectable sales focusing on coins, entertainment and music memorabilia and rare books.

Signed presidential and other politically significant documents and letters brought high bids at a Heritage (15/20/15% buyer’s premium) sale, but more costly than those lots was this photograph of Marilyn Monroe.

‘The Day the Music Died’ poster sets auction record

The only known poster from ‘The Day the Music Died’ became the most expensive concert poster when it sold for a premium inclusive $447,000 ($379,500) at Heritage Auctions of Dallas on November 11.

Cartoonist put politics to one side

Much, much earlier than most other entries in a comics and comic art sale that ran at Heritage (25% buyer’s premium) from September 30 to October 2 were examples of the work of Winsor McCay (c.1866-67-1934), who was well known as an accomplished editorial and political cartoonist and for his work in the world of animation and cartoon strips.

Atomic bomber’s secret logbook made headlines

Sold at $440,000 (£371,000), the most expensive lot in a three-day auction at Heritage (25% buyer’s premium) was a logbook kept on the B29 Superfortress bomber that dropped an atomic bomb on the Japanese city of Hiroshima in 1945.

Sherlock’s brother detected in Arthur Conan Doyle autograph manuscript

Making its third appearance at auction in almost 60 years, the 34pp autograph manuscript of Arthur Conan Doyle’s ‘The Adventure of the Greek Interpreter’, a tale from The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes collection of his stories that first appeared in The Strand magazine in 1893, has sold for $280,000 (£236,090) in Dallas.
