Chiswick Auctions

Chiswick Auctions is a West London auction house with 20 specialist departments including fine art, furniture, jewellery, silver, wine, arms and armour, books and fashion. It holds regular specialist sales as well as a monthly design and interiors sales.

The firm is jointly run by William Rouse and Leigh Osborne. In 2017, Chiswick Auctions announced plans to open a South Kensington showroom manned by a group of former Christie’s staff.

How ‘duty dodgers’ can pay their way at auction today

The term ‘duty dodgers’ is applied to pieces that were not sent for assay during the period 1720-58 when a steep tax was placed on silver. Silversmiths had a variety of methods of escaping this tax – including transposing marks from small articles to large or overstriking marks from older pieces.
