Mitchells
Located in the Cumbrian market town of Cockermouth, Mitchells began as an auctioneer of livestock and furniture in 1873.
In 2002 the livestock and land agency sector moved out of the town centre but the antiques and fine art auctions continue to be held in the original Victorian cattle market with its central octagonal ring acting as the main saleroom.
Mitchells hold regular general sales but their antiques and fine art sales are held quarterly, alongside bi-annual sporting sales.

Lillie Langtry’s lost lovers
29 June 2004A FOUR-page, colour illustrated feature in the April 25 issue of The Sunday Times Magazine will have done nothing to harm the saleroom prospects of a collection of 13 love letters written in the period January 1881-June 1882 by the actress Lillie Langtry, “the adored pin-up whose affairs rocked Victorian Britain”, and on May 13 Cumbrian auctioneers Mitchells of Cockermouth sold the lot for £5000.

Countrywide trade face private battles at Cumbria sale
23 January 2002STRONG private interest from well beyond the local area meant the trade, drawn mainly from the North and across the Border but also including dealers from Kent and as far as Holland, faced stern competition at this 1100-lot Cumbrian sale at Mitchells on 6-7 December.
