East of England
Maintaining momentum… upbeat Bailey and Penman
24 August 2004HAVING reported on trade expansion, it is equally encouraging to see seasoned organisers such as Robert Bailey and Caroline Penman in a similarly upbeat mood.
Penman is new hand at plough in potentially rich furrows
19 August 2004LONG-TIME readers may recall that I used to wonder why East Anglia, such a fertile ground for everything from agriculture to antiques shops, remained something of a wasteland in terms of fairs. What, I asked, held organisers back? The place may be a little off the beaten track but it is rich in artistic heritage from Cotman and Constable to Munnings, it has history from Hereward to Nelson and there has always been money from medieval wool days through to the present acres of wheatfields.
Bogus police target jewellery dealer
10 August 2004A GANG made off with £400,000 worth of Asian jewellery after fooling a shop owner into believing they were police officers. Pretending to carry out a drugs raid, the men appeared to be genuine policemen with uniforms, radios, evidence bags, bullet-proof vests, and what appeared to be authentic ID and search warrants.
Victorian games go to museum
10 August 2004AS one of Keys of Aylsham's (10% buyer's premium) huge, six-a-year, sales aimed squarely at collectors, the strengths of this 1423-lot outing on June 17-18 lay in toys and militaria.
Going ahead at the double
21 July 2004NORFOLK organiser (and dealer) Liz Allport-Lomax holds her second Southwold Summer Antiques Fair at St Felix School in the picturesque small Suffolk coastal town from July 23 to 25.
Old favourites still solid sellers in selective market
20 July 2004THE ups and, more depressingly, the downs of the market this year make the results of a steady day’s selling of material put together by Nigel Papworth at Diamond Mills’ (11.75% buyer's premium) Felixstowe rooms at the end of June look positively encouraging.
Bootiful people
07 July 2004POSH country house car boot sales are becoming almost as common as the more familiar down-market variety.

07 July 2004PICTURED right is a 2ft 1in (64cm) Jacobean amputation saw made by Robert Hobbs that is appearing at a sale at the Cedars Hotel in Stowmarket, Suffolk on July 30.
For pleasure and profit, Snape is the trade’s ideal working holiday
07 July 2004FOR years now, the annual Snape Maltings Antiques and Fine Art Fair has been an institution in the fairs world. Sited in a large tented pavilion behind the Maltings in the beautiful Suffolk countryside, it is certainly a contender for the most attractive setting of any fair anywhere. But it has been going for 37 years and no event lasts that long on looks alone.
Rozenburg garniture is £4000 highlight
29 June 2004WITH giant sales every three weeks, Keys (10% buyer's premium) of Aylsham will cheerfully put two-figure lots under the hammer, but there were also a number of four-figure sellers to help swell the hammer total to £110,000 at the latest 1640-lot outing on June 2-3.
Rumbles of better news arrive from Chittering
29 June 2004A FEW weeks ago, The Guardian published a sensible and responsible feature concerning the current malaise of the antiques trade.
Now East Anglia is new ground for Penman to pioneer
29 June 2004FEW fair organisers are bolder than Caroline Penman who, for decades, has been putting together such respected and traditional fixtures as the Chelsea and West London Antique Fairs. Not every Penman endeavour succeeds, but Caroline keeps coming up with new ideas and venues and, from September 3 to 5, she moves to East Anglia to launch the Bury St. Edmunds Antiques Fair at The Athenaeum in the Suffolk town’s Angel Square.
Worcester blue now scales the heights
22 June 2004THE very earliest English porcelain has long held sway in the market, but one feature of Part I of the mammoth Zorensky Worcester collection sold by Bonhams in March was the high prices paid for some of the late 1760s and early 1770s underglaze blue ground tablewares.
Monzani flute plays £2200
22 June 2004HIGHLIGHT of the Collectors’ Sale conducted by Keys (10% buyer’s premium) in Aylsham was this silver-mounted ivory flute by Monzani.
Salvo special
22 June 2004THAT most singular of publications, Salvo, holds its annual fair on July 3 and 4 at Knebworth House, Hertfordshire.
Mutineer’s prop
22 June 2004THIS walking stick, thought to have once belonged to John Adams, the longest surviving of the Bounty mutineers, will be on offer at Sworders' (15% buyer’s premium) Summer Country House sale on July 20-21. It is made from a vine found on Pitcairn Island, where Adams and eight of the other mutineers famously settled after landing there on January 23, 1790.
The Wright stuff – pamphlet soars to £2500
16 June 2004FOUND in a box of aviation books that was brought into the salerooms of Sworders of Stansted Mountfitchet following a North London house clearance was a little pamphlet entitled Experiments and Observations in Soaring Flight.
Why the watercolour world of Lear now looks affordable
15 June 2004OVER the last couple of years, a number of auctioneers have been complaining that lesser-name Victorian watercolours in the sub-£500 range have become the weakest of all areas at picture sales, sometimes to the point of having no market at all.
Concerning Biggles and the witches, cookery, Egypt and corkscrews
10 June 2004THE estimates were rather modest, but prices paid for some of the Biggles books offered as part of a May 21 sale held by Keys of Aylsham bode well for the Biggles collection that Dominic Winter are to sell on June 24. In Aylsham, Hamilton copies of The Black Peril of c.1936, in soiled blue cloth, and The Cruise of the Condor, an undated Ace series title with adverts for Spring 1937, were valued at around £40 apiece but sold for £1050 and £480 respectively.
…but a barn conversion sounds great
10 June 2004CAMBRIDGESHIRE dealers Simon and Penny Rumble generally deal with the trade and by appointment only from Causeway End Farmhouse, Chittering, but they have just converted a barn into a new showroom and celebrate from June 17 to 20 with a selling exhibition to which everyone is welcome.
